WHAT IS EAT YOUR STREET?

Eat Your Street is an urban gardening initiative launched in Whitefield, Bangalore with the aim of encouraging resources and communities to grow food in neglected public  spaces and transforming them to thriving, edible gardens.

WHO CAN BE A PART OF EAT YOUR STREET?

People like you and me, anybody, who is passionate to work together in a cohesive community dedicated to sharing the responsibility of the future of our planet, and ourselves.

IS THIS A GOOD IDEA?

Yes! It’s a great idea!

Great many countries are already practising urban agriculture one way or the other. Urban agriculture was officially recognised by the 15th FAO-COAG (Council of Australian Governments) session in Rome during January 1999 and subsequently at the World Food Summit in 2002. It is estimated (UNDP 1996; FAO 1999) that 800 million urban dwellers are actively engaged in urban agriculture in one way or another.

  • Over 26000 popular gardens cover 2438, 7 hectares in Havana and produce 25000 tons of food each year; a total of 299 square kilometres of urban agriculture produces 113525 tons/year.
  • In Dar es Salaam, urban agriculture forms at least 60% of the informal sector.
  • In Harare, sixty percent of food consumed by low-income groups was self-produced.
  • Dakar produces 60% of the national vegetable consumption.
  • In Accra, 90% of the city’s fresh vegetable consumption is from production within the city.
  • In Hyderabad, it was found that households that produce vegetables saved 20 per cent of their total food expenditures by retaining part of the produce for household consumption.

SO WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Urban farming is the path to freedom!

  1. Provides easy access to fresh, nutritious, local food. Keeps the resources in house. Removes our dependence on food sources with unknown production systems.
  2. Supply to urban food markets, street food and food processing, providing additional employment and income generation potential.
  3. Water harvesting, and urban wastes re-cycling to provide water and compost to sustain requirements of urban agriculture.
  4. Integration of urban agriculture with urban greening programmes which can reduce pollution and temperatures, as well as offer opportunities to improve quality of life for all urban residents. Gardening is a way to exercise and stay fit, and a super stress buster!
  5. You are a model citizen. By eating your own food you stop contributing to fossil fuel pollution. You’re eliminating your share of chemicals sprayed on food; your share of plastics and you give back and replenish the earth.
  6. We will be the proud pioneers of a new food revolution that is yet to rock India!
